Sugar Cookies

One of the most popular treats associated with Christmas are Sugar Cookies, and it's not hard to understand why. They're so delicious, and so versatile with any holiday. They sum up the holidays in a nutshell.; so festive! There are so many sugar cookie recipes out there that it can be hard to find one that's perfect, but this is my personal favorite. My favorite part is that they
only take 6 minutes to bake. (Have I mentioned I have poor patience and a low attention span?) The recipe is also from the Lion House Pantry, so it's bound to be amazing! Here are the Cookie Cutters I used. The decorating method I used is here. Bon Appetit!

Sugar Cookies
Adapted from Lion House Bakery

                              2 cups granulated sugar
  1 cup Shortening
                                                                 3 eggs
   1 cup milk
1 t. vanilla
1 t. lemon extract
6 1/2 c all-purpose flour
1 t. salt
1 t. baking soda
3 1/2 t. baking powder

Buttercream Icing

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
4 c powdered sugar
1 t. vanilla
3 T. milk

Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F. Cream together butter, shortening and eggs. Add your milk, vanilla, lemon extract and mix at a low speed. Add flour, salt, baking soda and mix until well blended. You should be able to handle the dough without it sticking to your hands. If not, add more flour.  Roll out dough on a well floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes and place on cookie sheets. Bake for 6-8 minutes until they a light golden brown around the edges. Cool before frosting.

For icing: Beat butter and shortening for 2 minutes at medium speed. Add your flavorings. Slowly add powdered sugar while mixer is on low speed. Add milk until it's a medium consistency. Add coloring until it's your desired color. I piped it using a Wilton 16 star tip.
